Electronic fitness

Mood: Good
Hair: Pony
Eyes: ...sigh
Listening to: Sparky unrolling the yoga mat
I am--with assistance--setting up the Wii Yoga.

The mat is pink. Gaahhh.

Should be interesting.

No, I will not be posting video. You'll have to come to my house to laugh...

...oh, wait. We got the "Starter Kit" which doesn't include the GAME.

Nevermind. I'm gonna bowl instead.

Funny ads

Mood: ok
Hair: unwashed
Eyes: fubar
Listening to: the carbonation in my pop can
These ads are pretty funny, especially for those who've ridden on the Tube. There is just something quintessentially British about them. My favorite, from the "only in England" files:
"Thanks, mate."

found here

Urban Word:
mouse potato: Someone who spends all their time on the computer surfing the net or playing games. Similar to couch potato.

It was bad enough to witness the devolution of humanity to mouse potato, but now that people can take their games with them, does that make them phone potatoes? Tube potatoes, in the case above?

Wordy again

I have an enormous collection of words for the end of posts. It's getting out of control; I don't use every Urban Dictionary choice, but I save many of them for appropriate days. However, between Urban Dictionary and WordSpy, I have over 40 currently saved. So in a post that will be boring for those of you who don't like this sort of thing, here are some of those I can't figure out how to use but I hate to delete.

Urban Word:
text support: Advice, encouragement delivered via text... frequently related to dating and boss hating. Pronounced like tech support.

I'm kind of wondering tonight if I need to provide some text support to a friend who doesn't sound like her evening is going to be fun.

Urban Word:
proximity infatuation: An infatuation that develops out of close-quarters operation with another person.

With school starting back up, all those proximity infatuations of summer are coming to an end, to be exchanged for new ones at school.

Urban Word:
Application for Debt: An offer of credit from a financial institution.

The Applications for Debt go directly to the shredder in our house.

Urban Word:
bats in the cave: visible clumps of nose goblins, often found clinging to nasal hair.

It's awfully uncomfortable to talk to someone with a large collection of bats in the cave.

Urban Word:
photobombing: Intentionally posing in other people's photos, for a later surprise.
Usually people making funny faces in the background, without the knowledge of the main subjects of the photo.

I think I need to start looking at the photos I've taken on vacation to check for signs of photobombing.

Urban Word:
ITYF: Acronym for 'I think you'll find' because sometimes FYI just isn't irritating and smug enough.

There are certain ponytailed acquaintances of mine for whom this acronym was created.

Urban Word:
date shield: A female 'friend' who shows no outward interest in you, but will go all out to prevent you from hooking with other women by slagging you behind your back.

I think the date shield phenomenon is WAY more prevalent in reverse: guys who get in the way of their female friends' dating lives. Why does it seem so much worse for guys when they have to deal with it.

WordSpy Word:
WORD: n. A child who is given lots of time for unstructured activities and play during the day.

I think I grew up as a free-range kid. Who knew?

WordSpy Word:
white pollution: n. Litter, particularly plastic bags, but also papers, cups, and food containers.

There must be a reason why most of our garbage in this country is made up of white pollution; oh the irony!

WordSpy Word:
pinkwashing: pp. Using support for breast cancer research to market products, particularly products that cause cancer.

U.S. corporations aren't all that worried about the obviousness of the hypocrisy of pinkwashing, but I hope consumers are more so.

OK, and one fun thing I found at the hat's place awhile ago. It is a game in which you try to come up with the top 100 most common words in English in five minutes. Go play. It's harder than it sounds.

James Joyce is my hero*

Mood: Good
Hair: A mess
Eyes: Dry and tired
Listening to: NASCAR is on the tube(sigh)
Well, we have scrounged one extra kid for the mission trip (thanks, AN!). We're still looking for two more. Things are coming together for this trip, though. I took paperwork to the mom of today's addition and we had a great chat.

Then I came home and watched a Gene Kelly movie on DVD (That's Dancing!), followed by about half of a newer version of Little House on the Prairie (Disney). I caught up my book blog (though I've just realized that I didn't enter ...Big Woods), did a bunch of Friday memes, finished and put away a load of laundry, went to the store, downloaded about 6 CDs onto my Zen (and how--HOW!--does one delete shit from one's MP3 player, eh?!), read the church newsletter while on hold waiting for the phone to be taken to my mom's room, talked to Mom (more time on hold than talking), and obsessed over the weather. Which sucked.

Sparky had a fun post-school: for the second time this school year, he got detoured after school due to tornado activity. He and his friend were walking to the library--I wasn't working today, but there is Wii, I think, today--when the tornado siren went off. So they took off running, were waved into the building and directly into the basement with the staff and the sensible people in the building. Apparently, this is an every-six-months thing this school year. Weird. The worst of the storm today hit only slightly east of when it centered last time. Not really that close to town, as it turns out.

Meanwhile...nothing but wind and sideways rain here at the house. No sirens. No warnings. Spring is weird.

Tonight, Beast finished building the shelves in the basement that goofed up his back last week. Meanwhile Sparky and I played Apples to Apples--our own made-up rules, since it's designed for at least 4 players. He beat me. That sucked. ;-)

Generally, the best part of the day was the fact that I finished the list I made today. That rarely happens. Maybe I'm getting better at making lists....

Now I'm going to bed, because I slept very poorly last night, mostly because I went to bed late and Beast had literally taken over the entire bed. This is only notable because I'm normally the one who does that sort of thing.

Tomorrow: work. Waste of time, really, since I checked the schedule before I left yesterday and I will be on desks for over half my scheduled hours. No cataloging. Again. I'm up to three carts of backlog now. Last fall I had a shelf of backlog. Oh, well. The further behind I get, the more obvious it is that Schedule Nazi is fucking me over in spades; and the more she does that in obvious ways, the longer my CYA document gets. {{shrug}} No more Ms. Nice Cat.

Urban Word:
Viagrate: To imbue with lasting vigor

I seem to be finding a few ways to Viagrate my life again.

M E H

Mood: meh
Hair: clean and meh
Eyes: meh
Listening to: Sparky playing Matrix (the videogame)--my son the Action Hero

I'm sick.

I don't like being sick, especially this kind since it means that I can't sleep without my head plugging up and my throat getting sore.

On the other hand, the return of the Beast is imminent. His flight landed about 90 minutes ago so he should be walking through the door almost any second.

Otherwise: bluuuurrrrghh

OMG

Is it just me, or is this totally a Guys Only game? I just don't see it working in a women's environment.

Can you picture this being played someplace like a library? Holy...er...yeah, nevermind. Funny, yes. Goofy, yes. Let's not share it with the high school kids in our community, ok?

Where did I find this? The link was here. This is not your parents' youth group!!

Good deed

They can be fun AND educational. If you go play with words at Free Rice, you are donating food for every right answer to the UN World Food Program. It took me less than 10 minutes to donate 300 grains of rice. I think that's probably lunch for someone...hell, that's probably the entire day's food for someone!

Anyway. Go. Learn. Do something for someone else. I'm off to do just that right now.

Things I've noticed lately

It's really hot this week. On top of the heat--which I continue to insist that I like--it's humid. If it were only hot, I could manage; it's the humidity that does me in. Just think: in six months, everyone--including me!--will be complaining about the cold. It's rare for me to gripe about heat, but I'll join the chorus on cold. I'm very grateful I don't live any further south this time of year, though.

Some crazy person has decided that the Declaration of Independence is too hard for her students to understand, so she is rewriting it. My issue with this: how 'bout taking the time you're using to recreate...uhm...BEAUTY...and try using it to teach kids to understand complicated but specific language! (via here)

I have to go to a funeral/visitation today. [I really hate the word "visitation" by the way. It sounds rather spooky.] Anyway, this is the funeral of someone I don't remember ever meeting: the sister of a coworker. NOT the sister of Crazy Cat Lady! There's a whole back-story to this with her, but I'm trying to develop amnesia about CCL's existence. Yeah, so I have to find appropriate funeral apparel that I won't ruin by sweating. Black and summer really don't go together much.

Other than that, I'm going to try very hard not to think about the interpersonal parts of work today. I may do some work on the CD reclassing project that's imminent, but that's part of my job that I like: ok, the old number is 784.3 but the new number should be 781.66 (or something). Thanks to Amy, I don't have to start from scratch on this!

Sparky is going to his personal nirvana with a friend today for this friend's birthday. I've been in this place once. That was sufficient. C.'s mom is taking the guys today and then Sparky will spend the night at C.'s house, where I'm sure he'll be up till the wee hours videogaming again. So I have a totally teen-free afternoon ahead of me! W00t!

One of my rewards for today is playing a game Kwizgiver found that combines geographical knowledge with Tetris. I love Tetris. I'm a little scary about playing Tetris, in fact. I hope this is as fun as it looks.

There is (faint) hope that some Crazy Christians are (finally) getting over Harry Potter. But, guys, we are not the American Library Society; our initials are ALA. Figure it out. And so I left a comment. ;-) (via here)

Earlier this week, fracas published a list of slang words for drugs. In scanning the list I was gratified to discover that I recognized the majority of the words, if not for the specific drug, then for something to do with drugs. If you have kids, are around kids, teach or generally want to know something of what teen culture is like, go read this list. And then pay attention!

It's official: my alarm clock just started beeping. Guess my day has started. Time to face facts and get moving.

Overlap

All you people out there in BlogLand? I'm dreaming about you. In typical dream behavior, I'm mixing you all together into different people entirely. For example, Lisa now has strawberry blond hair--and a slightly different hairstyle--and your name is Annie, but you still have the same child, although he's 9 years old and has dark hair, and we went to high school together.

On top of all the mix-and-match weirdness, I've added elements of The Sims like being able to redecorate and move walls at a whim. I think I even incorporated one of the books I finished this week.

I have a weird way of consolidating everything in my life. At least none of you ended up working with me! It's possible that I'm so zoned at work that I can't even remember it: I cataloged nearly 100 items yesterday, in 6 hours. Gotta love copycatting!

Today I have a staff meeting at 8, but I don't start actually working until noon, though I think I'll see if I can show upat 1 instead, otherwise I'll be there for 10 hours (minus a dinner break, which I usually don't take anyway).

Dreaming was more interesting. Can I go back to bed now?
