Editorial Note: Gravy, meaning “profit or benefit, especially if unexpectedly or easily obtained” is dated back to 1910 by the Historical Dictionary of American Slang. It also dates the adjective gravy, meaning “easy or cushy,” to 1917.



informationalization
n. the computerization of business, industry, and military.

Editorial Note: Probably directly related to the term informatics, the science of gathering, storing, organizing, and using information.
Etymological Note: This word appears to be most common in East Asian countries where English is a language of business but not of the home.



one-finger peace sign
n. the raised middle finger, intended as an insult.



stork mark
n. an impermanent blemish on the skin of a newborn baby.

Etymological Note: From the folk story that newborns are brought to families by storks.



sweep room
n. a place in which tardy students are detained in lieu of sending them to their classes.

Etymological Note: So named because students are gathered in searching sweeps of hallways and grounds.
