3/31/05 Library must take action to reassure the public (editorial)

When mistakes are made, heads don't always have to roll, even when the people making the mistakes are public officials like R_______ Public Library director [K.].

But when they don't, the people who make such decisions need to be open about why not and spell out exactly what they are going to do to fix the problem. The library board seems willing to do that and to take appropriate measures to ensure the mistake doesn't happen again.

Time will tell if that's good enough for the public. [

4/8/05 Library misuse case sent to state

A request that local authorities investigate the city's library director for possible criminal charges for abusing credit-card privileges has been forwarded to the [state] attorney general's office.

The R______ Public Library's board of directors temporarily stripped [K.] of her business credit-card privileges last month after trustees learned that she had racked up about $1,000 in personal purchases on the card.

4/9/05 Director of library on leave for week

The city's library director will serve a one-week suspension without pay effective Monday, but board members won't say why.

The nine-member library board ratified a three-year labor contract with union employees at a special meeting Friday, then met behind closed doors for nearly two hours before announcing [K.]'s suspension.
