Upsetting

I grew up in Colorado, in a suburb of Denver. My parents and I went to church about 3 miles from my house, in yet another suburb. That church was and is 2.5 miles as the crow flies from Columbine High School. When I was in high school in the late 70s and early 80s, many of the other teens at my church went to school at Columbine.

So, on April 19 20, 1999, I watched with the same profound shock and horror as the rest of the country as two boys destroyed any shards of any feeling of safety we had left about our country's schools. The acrid icing on that poisonous cake was that I knew alumni, I knew the community, I knew the places the national media was talking about: Swedish Medical Center (I was a candystriper there), Clement Park (teen hangout), Ken Caryl Ranch (lots of our church members lived there), and so on.

Knowing the area, of course, didn't make the event any more comprehensible. The explanations that the media quickly began to promote didn't make a lot of sense either. And that school's architecture is forever etched in my brain as a building I don't want to be near. Ever.

In 2001, we went to visit my family (who now live elsewhere in Colorado) and stopped in Denver for a couple of days. One of those days was a Sunday, so we went back to "my" church. There were a few discrete items in the building and moments during the service where the presence of the killings loomed large, even two years later.

The next day, we went to visit all the family graves (most of my family is in two large cemeteries on different sides of the city). As we drove through the cemetery looking for my father's burial site, we slowly approached 13 crosses standing in an "island" in the roadway. My father's resting place is about 25 feet from the official memorial for the Columbine victims. I believe those crosses were wooden at that time. They have since been replaced by 8'-tall black granite crosses. (If you watch the virtual tour here, you'll see the crosses at the end, briefly.)

Aside: my father built the original mortuary at this cemetery in the mid-1960s. He was paid, at least in part, in kind: four burial plots.

ANYWAY. I'm reading the book pictured here--Dave Cullen's "Columbine." It is very detailed, easy to read...and I've been trying hard not to read it at bedtime so that it doesn't affect my dreams too much.

I am about 2/3 through the book. I may have to stop reading it. I spent part of today compulsively Googling factoids, drawings, schematics, and photos since the book itself is all text. And I came across a photo today that I never should have embiggened. I knew when I saw it small that clicking on it would be a bad idea. And I watched my hand as the index finger banged down on the left mouse button anyway. Now I can't get the image out of my head, and it only fueled my compulsion to do more research.

I know that what I'm looking for is twofold: 1) Why did Harris and Klebold do what they did? and 2) How can I be sure that my son will never, ever, be involved in something like this? I know that reading this book is not going to answer either of those questions. It's the same quandary I had in 1999 immediately after the shootings happened, and after 9/11, and all the other times when I've wanted nothing more than to go far away from the world and protect my son from Everything Bad. The panic will pass. In the meantime, I can't help but look at every passing teenager with the thought "This could be the one. Or that one could be...."

The mission trip in a week--where I'm surrounded by 60 high school kids 24/7--could be fun if I don't get over this tout de suite. Anxiety + paranoia is not a great frame of mind to be in anyway. It makes for difficulty in concentration among other things. There are no answers, and eventually I'll get back to accepting that fact.

Housekeeping

I'm cleaning my blog up. If you read my posts in a feed that updates you when I make changes to entries, you're going to see a lot of updates. Just so you know. ;-)

Urban Word:
WDT: Acronym for "who does that?" -- spoken incredulously.

I'm wading my old posts in an attempt to clean 'em up. I know, I know: WDT??

Poetry Month

MISPRISION
by Tony Towle

someone said Sappho could be understood
only through her original tongue
and I said I didn't think so
as educational as that would probably be

someone wrote that Charles VIII
entered France in the 1490s
and I said to myself: I don't think so
he was born many years before that
but he did penetrate Italy in 1494
as far as Naples, and didn't withdraw
for an entire year, which seems extraordinary
by today's standards
but he finally lost virility and everything else
by hitting his head on a doorway in 1498

someone wrote that gardening was a literature
in which scholars nibbled at the edges
of what appeared to be an insurmountable edifice
and I thought that makes perfect sense
nibbling is an authenti scholarly pursuit
and eventually the edifice will get lower and can be surmounted.

somebody said the cretins painted murals
and got out of labyrinths but that seems unlikely
and someone wrote to say it's time for a poetry museum
but I don't understand how anyone could possibly know that
and isn't that what our books are already
glassless vitrines
where you're allowed to run your fingers over the art
or nibble on the implications
or loiter in the white passageways between the lines
hoping to meet the lenders to the exhibition

If you don't know the meaning of some of the words, go look 'em up. It'll be worth it (in Google, just type "define [word]"--no quotes).

The history of (parts of) Africa in the 1970s, in a song.

And I can't help but wonder if the inventors of Pac-Man listened to Fela while programming the sounds effects: waka waka waka.

Ahem...testing...

...is this thing on?

Yes, I'm still around, as those of you who check in the memespot know, but I haven't posted anything here because it's all been whiny weird stuff about Harry Potter and cataloging and being buried in cataloging, and being cranky in general.

Tonight we had a big thunderstorm. Not big enough to cause major power issues, but we did lose power once completely and had several "dips" in power throughout the evening. Fun storm. Very loud. Good rain for the corn (oh, I forgot to mention allergies up above) and other growing things.

So, what's on my mind? My brain feels like week-old corned-beef hash. I can't make anything out of it, there are parts that seem suspiciously like mold, but they are adhered firmly to things that I know I still can use, no--NEED to use!--but really the whole bucket should be slung out, scraped clean, and started fresh.

I hate to leave you with that rather dire image, so I'll just point to the left at a new toy I added to the page. After some...bizarre...testing, it seems to work, but I'm not sure how secure it is. In other words, what you type may be visible to others. Or not. I know that if I'm online, I'll see you right away; and if I'm offline, I'll get an archived post.

And now I've got this song stuck in my mind, so I need to go find something to replace it. Did ya'll know there's actually a place called Slumgullion Pass?

Sweet dreams everyone.

yada yada yada

My shoulder is better. Of course: it was paying attention this morning when I called and made an appointment for a massage tomorrow morning, her earliest opening. I have smelled of Ben-Gay all day (oooh, pote-ry!). Feh.

I'm getting very-damn-little accomplished at work: still two full carts of materials to catalog. Oh, well. It'll wait, and I have job security for the next several months!

BUT, I spent this evening getting through ALL the listserve messages that have accrued at work. I was up to about 600. No, I did NOT read them all. However, I think that I will send private messages to OCLC-CAT and AUTO-CAT listserve people letting them know that if they don't do something about WinGNUTship and his idiocy, I will unsubscribe because I can't possibly want to post anything on them, ever, with him around. He's a total jerk, and consistently jumps on people for the most asinine reasons and in the most petty ways. And...he's not even a cataloger!! In fact, he's not even a librarian! WTF, dude, WTF...!

Oops. I was sounding almost sane there for a mo, wasn't I, till I got on that moron. In any case, I'm caught up (for now). I also spent an hour clearing out multiple saved Bloglines posts. I'm down to 16. They are all saved for good reasons (Haloscan issues, stuff to forward to Sue K and Ken re church communication/website development, typos to check in our catalog, memes to do Sunday...etc.), and it's exactly half of what was around earlier this evening.

It's cold as hell here, just where it's supposed to remain through the weekend. Yish. Have I bought a new Easter dress? Do the Boys have Easter clothes? No, and no. Oh, well. Bad mom/wife. Shoot me.

Pretty uninspired stuff tonight. Sorry. I'm half-watching some show Beast is watching about the Dead Sea scrolls and Qumran. I'm a sucker on this subject, so I guess I'll close this and just watch it.

60 Minutes

I don't normally watch this anymore, although I grew up watching it every week with my parents.

However, I just came across this post from Library Stuff about part of tonight's show. I'll be turning off football to watch. I think it's important, as so many of the Holocaust victims are dying every year now, to remember that this was a real event, and wholesale evil at every step. As Beast said when I mentioned it to him, "Nothing good came out of the Third Reich."
