I arrived at work this morning at 8:50 to find a truck from the local electrical utility parked across 3/4 of the staff parking places. When I started into the building, Crazy Cat Woman and the custodian (how alliterative!) were just walking out of the building. CCW went 'round my truck and across the parking lot, completely focused on her narrow stretch of Reality. I asked the custodian what was up and he told me we were without power and CCW was taking her lunch home so it wouldn't spoil in the fridge. Yeah, in four hours in a fridge that's closed and off for (at that point) less than 2 hours.
Whatever.
So, no power. No computers, no lights, no copiers, nothing to really work on, and no way to do about 85% of the work I needed to do. So I worked on the inventory list I'd printed off on Friday, and ... jeez, I'm not sure what else I did, honestly.
The power came back on about 11. I logged on and started attempting to work, took a 45-minute lunch break, covered for someone at the Ref Desk for about 10 minutes, dealt with some of the more urgent emails (hee hee) and prepared to start working on the bulk of the cataloging I need to do. Techie Librarian asked if I knew how to check the server that didn't want to restart and was in the middle of showing me what needed to be done...
...when the power went out again. We did the checklist around a power outage and "got to" flip the Big Switches over since something really dire had occurred (don't ask me what: if a light that is supposed to be green is red--which it was--we go do the Frankenstein thing with two big switches at the main inside power supply).
Then we returned to the main level and semi-darkness. I did some more inventory, there was desultory reference work and a call from Beast saying he's been called out of town urgently for the next couple of nights, Sparky returned from his overnight, and I did some work on the Dewey changes and lists I keep handy for slow periods.
Sparky did not sleep at all last night: too many games to play! He crashed on the drive from Z's house, and was pretty cranky while he waited me to finish my time at work. We came home and played Worst Cast Scenario, and ate good bread (I dipped my chunks of bread in olive oil, Sparky ate his straight). He perked up once he had some food inside him--he also told me that there was absolutely no healthy food at Z's house, and only Kool-Aid to drink...he sounded thoroughly disgusted. "I'm SOOOOoooo thirsty; all I've had to drink since last night is Kool-Aid. Yuck." I guess I have fubar'd him! What kid doesn't like Kool-Aid??
Anyway. He's outside shooting hoops with the neighbor guys, having totally forgotten how tired he was (is). I'm supposed to be checking email and typing up the minutes for last month's Session meeting...but I'm tooling around the net instead.
All in all, a very strange day.
