Birthdays and work

Weather: 39 degrees (feels like 32); SUNNY
Mood: Good
Listening to: Prince, 1999 (oo-ee-sha-sha-coo-coo-yeah (all the hippies sing together))
Where am I? Work

Beast and I took Sparky to his favorite restaurant for his birthday dinner. You can tell how old he is by the restaurant he picked: Old Country Buffet. Oh, yummy: tasteless chicken, with sugars and starches everywhere! At least he’s a cheap date…. The bussers (not the kind that kiss, luckily for him—no, think “cleanup crew”) came and sang ‘Happy Birthday to him.’ I’ve never seen the boy blush before!

When we got home, there was a message from Beast’s parents, in which they also sang to him. We didn’t do much else. His celebration is Saturday: a boys’ trip with a friend to Gameworks. I get to stay home to do laundry and prep for the Super Bowl party the next day. My choice. Crazy weekend. I think we’ll go on Monday for the ear-piercing, after I make some calls.

As we were eating, Beast mentioned a conversation he had with someone at work recently in which the fact that I work at the library arose. Apparently, this is not someone Beast talks to very often. Anyway, it turns out this guy is one of our regular and very nice patrons. He couldn’t place me, so Beast showed him the family picture he keeps in his office (to scare the mice). “Oh, she’s the nice librarian! She’s always so helpful and friendly, and she knows a lot about computers.”

Which was a nice balance to the nutbar who came in while I was out of town and again yesterday asking why we don’t have anything in our collection on “the new stuff God is doing.” The police were in the parking lot as she left—arresting someone, but we don’t know why, just another day in the life—so she went and ‘helped,’ apparently trying to cast out the arrestee’s demons. Now there’s a woman, as the director said, to be VERY VERY nice to…. Can’t wait to meet her. Maybe she can cast out some of my demons.
